Blessed by Goddess Mangalamba, Mangaladevi Kashetra is a sacred land active with abundant religious ceremonies, celebrations and festivities. Goddess Mangaladevi fullfills all the wishes and desires of the people who come to her abode, She is the one who provides all the necessities to the people of this land and attracts everyone towards her with her mere beauty and godly powers. Being caught in the hardship of the Samsaara (family), she is only one who can provide peace from all the hardships faced.👏

For our beloved Mother Goddess Mangalamma, who is merrily residing in our hearts, it is the 34th PunarPratista ( a day when there were substancial changes been done in the outlook of the temple) day. As per her will and desire this year, the Punar pratista day shall be celebrated in a grand manner with Gana Homa and Pancha vishanti Kalashabhishekham to be held to goddess along with the Maha pooja performed to her in the afternoon and in the night. Afterwards There shall be Bali utsava, small chariot procession, and also the Vasantha Mantapa Pooja.

She is residing in the hearts of each and every devotees and is ever ready to protect/rescue us from all calamities and disasters that is taking place in and around us. Let us all bow to her divine feet seeking protection and help to fulfill all our wishes and do things that are good to us in our lives. 👏

Mangaladevi temple is one of the countries significant shrines and pilgrimage destinations of Shaktism. Marching towards the path of development and actively participating in the social welfare and religious activities, we need to bow down to the richness of this great temple.

In these 33 years after the completion of the purna pratista, goddess has made sure that she has renovated the interior and outer regions of the temple time and again with her will. Sitting majestically inside the sanctum sanctroum of the temple like a beautiful queen, it is her orders/will that presides the renovation works and it is indeed a bliss to see her change the temple according to the current prevailing style and generation.

The Name Mangaladevi itself contains auspiciousness in it. Mangala in regional languages mean Good, auspicious. There is a direct link between the Mangaladevi temple and the city named Mangalore, the divine name Mangaladevi is associated with the Mangalore city. It is because of the Goddess Mangaladevi, this city came to called Mangalapura, Mangalore etc.

The city of Mangalore was ruled by the mighty rulers of the Alupa dynasty. From time to time, renovation works was in progress and was done by various rulers of the Alupa dynasty. King Kundavarma, who ruled Mangalapura from 950 A.D to 980 A.D, is said to have renovated the Kadali Manjunatha temple and Mangaladevi temple at the same time in the year 960 A.D

In Skanda purana, it is said that, Bangaraja who came after the reigns of Kundavarma, of Alupa dynasty, built the city of Mangalore as per the orders given by Goddess Mangaladevi in the kings dream. It is understood that Bangaraja ruled the city of Mangalapura from the year 1157 AD but we are unable to pin point the name of the king who built the Mangalapura town upon the orders of the goddess. It is in belief that the Mangaladevi temple was built and renovation works were carried out even before the 8th century AD.

With all these significance, mythological and historical, the glorious backdrop of Mangalore, the famous Mahatobara Sri Mangaladevi Temple was completely dilapidated during the 1986 – 1987 period.

According to the tabular present the outside the temple, it is written that, Mangaladevi temple was renovated by the last ruler Veera Pandya II in the year 1390. After this the temple had undergone renovations at various stages from the year 1390 to 1987 by the people who stayed nearby the temple premises.

In order to fulfill all the aspirations of the religious heritage, the construction of the new temple began by demolishing of the old structures and creating a new one instead which is very beautiful and atractive.

The Archeological department that comes under the central government of India, took over the control of the Mangaladevi temple for it’s historical importance. Even today, the archeological department, legally, renovates the temple from time to time, as and when it is required. The main financial contribution to the construction of the new temple was given by this department along with the donations received from the devotees. A newly built sanctum sactorum and the outer surroundings of the temple were constructed during this period in the year 1988 – 1989.

In the newly constructedtemple, a Kalasha had to be placed in the peak of the main sanctum sanctroum of the temple, as per the vedic rituals to mark the completion of the renovation work and revive the presence of Goddess Mangaladevi inside it. This beautiful moment was held on wednesday, May 17th 1989

Under the guidance of Nileshwar Padmanabha Tantri, The main Priest Ramachandra Aithal, M Namadeva Shenoy, who was the chief administratrive officer of the temple the punar pratista Mahotsav of Sri Mangaladevi was held in great grandeur in the presence of thousands of her beloved devotees. Thus by the presence of Mangaladevi, this land became a heavenly abode on this planet. 

The original form of the Goddess was brought to the newly built sanctum sanctorum from the temporary shelter built before the renovation work began. The goddess was placed on the Main Paani peeta (seat) after placing the Asta bandha lepa (a herbal mixture of eight elements placed to fit the moola roopa in the seat tightly). It seemed as though the goddess was very pleased and merrily rejoicing in the newly renovated sanctum sanctorum and showered her blessings upon her devotees in the form of a heavy rain.

Thousand of devotees witnessed the vedic rituals being held as a part of punar pratista that began even before the sunrise. Even the non believers praised the success of this grand event held with great devotion and brother hood by her devotees. There was a Hari katha short story called ‘Sri Mangaladevi Mahatme’ was performed by the renowned artist Bhadragiri Achutadasa on this celebration in the night.

From then till today, it is customary to celebrate the punar pratista of Sri Devi on a regular basis on May 17’th each year with great grandeur and zeal.

Today the temple has reached its highest position with the blessings of Sri Mangaladevi and has turned into an eternal guide to her devotees. The powress of the goddess Mangaladevi has grown exponentially by the performance of the Trikaala pooja, Abhishekha and other vedic rituals done by the priests with great devotion. Mangaladevi who resides in the Linga form, fullfils all the wishes and rightful desires of her beloved devotees who come to her abode surrendering themselves completely to her and is the reason behind the inspiration for the renovation and other developments being done in the temple. It is with her sheer will and wish that all the renovation and other developments are being done by the temple authorities.

Around one and a half centuries ago, Sri Subbaraya Bhat handed over the worship and temple pooja rituals to Gangadhar Aithal, belonging to the barkoor. This marked the begining of the Pooja seva performed by the families belonging to the Gangadhar Aithal. The pooja is performed to the goddess accoring to the shaivism and the families who conduct the pooja to the goddess change every year. 14 families belonging to the Aithal sect and 2 from the Upadhyaya sect take turns every year to perform the pooja to the goddess. one out of these 16 families perform the pooja to the goddess from the month of Karkataka until the same month, next year. Thus these families, inturn circulate the pooja services offered to goddess by their familes in an yearly manner.

The construction of the present temple is magnificent and includes many specialties. Situated at the intersection of three roads, it is located facing the east. As we enter the premises of the temple, we can see a huge pupil tree standing high up into the sky.

Statues of Naga Devathas are present below this tree and are present directly facing the main entrance of the temple. We can see Maha Bali peeta being placed at the entrance of the temple and a flag pole having twice the height of the temple. Besides these, we can see the circumbulation path (pradakshina patha), a hall for cultural events and a main hall. The front of the entrance of the temple is decorated with a triangular doorway in the style of Kerala and as a decorative part, we can find Shri Devi Navratri’s decorative wall posters here.

As we enter the temple, We can find the temple’s administrative office to its left, interiors and also the Roof columns having an artistic wooden enclosing on its top. We can also find brass suspension bells on both the sides, that can be rung while the Maha pooja is in progress to the goddess. accommodate during worship. The entire space in the front yard is being carved out of two pillars. On the outskirts of the sanctum sanctorum, we can find the circumbulation path along with the statues of the Dwara Palakies (Gate keepers) holding a trident in their hands. The RangaMantapa infront of the sanctum sanctorum, consists of a roof top made up of wooden cravings and a lion seated right infront of the goddess.

To the right of the sanctum sactorum, we can find a grand statues of sage Veda Vyasa unveiling the story of Mahabharataha to lord Ganapathi, who is inturn making a note of it using his broken right teeth on a palm leaf. Next to this wall carving, we can find the treasure room of the temple consisting of valuable items like golden and diamond ornaments of the goddess, her palanquin, umbrella, chamara (Traditional fan) etc. Sanctum sactorum of the Goddess, the presence of Lord Mahaganapathy, the gaurdians dieties like Raktheshwari, Nandi Kona, Guligeshwar. A Tulasi plant along with the temple kitchen room and a place where the prasadam are packed can be seen in the inner courtyards of the Temple.

Cleanliness, Sanctity, Loyal staff members, Selfless service done by the Volunteers and the pooja done by the Priests with great devotion etc are few of the hallmarks of this great centuries old temple.

Culturals are given a great prominence in the temple. Cultural programs such as literature, oration given by great scholars on different topics like bhagavath geethaa and other mythological stories and their importance in our lives, the folk art of the district – Yakshagana, Harikatha etc. are arranged every day in the temple. Sri Devi Mahatme and its legendary chapters are performed successfully by the yakshagana artists belonging to the Sri Mangaladevi Yakshagana mela. This mela was created to safegaurd the cultural and folk arts of this district.

The temple of Mangaladevi, which gives peace of mind to all of us, is on the path of development as each day progresses.

❁Brahmakalashotsava and punar pratista was performed to the beloved goddess in the newly constructed temple,in the year 1989. ✻

❁ Dhanur maasa pooja was started as a part of service to goddess in the year 1993.✻

❁ March 15th, 1998, Sunday, foundation for the new flag pole was laid from the divine hands of ‘Jagadguru Bharathi teertha Swamiji’, seer belonging to the Sringeri Sharadha Mutt. ✻

❁ Brahmakalashotsava was performed to the goddess in the year 2002. The Brahma kalashotsava is performed every 12 years to increase the presence and powress of the goddess present in the temple. On this occassion a Kerala model style, triangular doorway, with images of the Goddess carved on it was installed. ✻

❁ March 23rd, 2002, Thursday, a Sun rays prabhavali (a representation of a halo in art, as a radiance-circle painted surrounding the head or a decorated wheel sculpted behind the head of an idol) made of silver and a Silver Axe (Bhargava kodali / representing the axe of Parasurama) was offerd to the goddess on the occassion of Annual jathra Mahotsav. ✻

❁ May 10th, 2002, Friday the welcome gateway was constructed besides the Mahanavami katte and was inaugrated by the Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt, Pejawara seer ‘Sri Visvesha Tirtha Sripadangalu’. ✻

❁ October 12th, 2002, Friday, on the first day of Navaratri, a Silver covering was presented to the gateway belonging to the entrance of the temple. On the same occassion, Anna santarpana commenced and on each friday, nutritious food is being provided to the devotees after the afternoon Mahapooja. This programme of Anna Santarpana continues till date without anyhindarance. ✻

❁ On the occassion of Navaratri in the year 2008, a new built modular kitchen and Vasantha Mantapa were offered to the divine feet of the goddess. ✻

❁ October 8th, 2010, on the first day of Navaratri, a silver covering was presented to the doors of main entrance to the temple along with a golden face was offered to the goddess. ✻

❁ Covering made up of gold was offered to Lord Ganesha on the occassion of Ganesh Chaturthi on 1st September 2011, thursday. ✻

❁ October 5th, 2013, on the first day of Navaratri, construction of a new roof cover was done in the inner and outer courtyards of the temple and was offered to the divine feet of the goddess. ✻

❁ 2015, March 4th to 15th, brahmakalashotsava was performed in the temple. On this occassion golden folwer mirror was offered to the festive diety of Sri Mangaladevi and a new seva counter was built and presented to the temple and on the occassion of Navratri, stone slabs were put in the main hall. ✻

❁ October 2’nd, Sunday,2016, on the occassion of Navaratri, Golden eyes were offered to the original idol of goddess Mangaladevi. ✻

❁ March 5th, 2018, tuesday, a five headed snake prabhavali made up of silver was placed on top of the main door to the entrance of the temple and was offered to the lotus feet of the goddess Mangaladevi. ✻

❁ October 10, 2018, wednesday, during the occassion of Navratri, copper and silver plated cover was dedicated to the seat of the flag pole of the temple. ✻

❁ October 29th, 2019, on the occassion of Navaratri, Shri Devi was offered with a new wooden hand on her right hand holding the abhaya mudra.✻

❁ To wash the soiled plates of the anna santarpana program, dish washer was dedicated on March 20th 2021, tuesday during the annual jathra mahotsav celebrations.✻

❁ Feb 21st 2021, Monday to March 28th Sunday, work done for more than a month, the inner and outer courtyards stone slabs where replaced with granite stones. ✻

It is with the blessings and wish of Sri Mangallamba all these renovation works were possible. She is the only one who is responsible for the upliftment of our temple, leading to its steadyprogress from time to time.

With the grace and blessings of goddess Mangaladevi, many of her devotees have overcome various difficulties in their paths of life. The Mother who gives us all the good fortune to be blessed with, has timely accepted our services done with love and devotion, also taken these services from us, herself on few occassions and ensured that this temple and her powress has grown so immensely with the progress of the time. We need to be thankful to our beloved goddess for allowing us to have glimpses of her majestic looks, merrily rejoicing in the inner sanctum sanctorum of the temple like a royal queen.

Tomorrow’s day shall mark the completion of 33 long years after the renovation works were fully completed in the temple. On this auspicious occassion, may the goddess bestow upon us and the whole world, a good fortune, good health and longevity.

May this punar pratista mahotsav be an occassion for us to receive her complete blessings filled with motherly love, care and affection. May all the righteous people enjoy the fruits of this celebration and bestow goodness back in their lives. Let us all be blessed with more opprotunities to do her service with great devotion and gratitude and reap the benefits of it in our lives ahead.
